Fluoride

Teeth are covered with a protective layer called enamel. Minerals are lost every day due to sugars and plaque bacteria. Fortunately, we can help strengthen and remineralize those areas by using minerals such as calcium and fluoride. Fluoride strengthens the enamel making the teeth more resistant to bacteria and decay.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in both freshwater and seawater. When we apply it topically, it provides the teeth with the minerals they need to resist harmful decay.

We can apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. When applied as a foam or gel, it is applied through the use of a foam mouthguard. This ensures the fluoride is directly applied to the teeth, and allows the excess to be eliminated without swallowing. When varnish fluoride is applied, it is painted directly on the teeth. Our knowledgeable team will determine which application is best for each patient.
